Hi, it depends on the type of bug. Bacteria (these are living) grow by something called binary fission. This just means that they split into more bacteria. This means that one bacteria on a surface can quickly multiply and form lots of different bacteria. Viruses (these aren’t alive) have to be inside a cell to grow more. These can’t grow at all if they can’t find a way of getting into your cells. It’s impossible to completely prevent bugs infecting you. They are around all the time and there are many good bugs living on your body. The main way to reduce the risk is to wash your hands regularly and make sure any meat you eat is cooked (this prevents food poisoning). To prevent other people from getting a cold it’s important to sneeze into tissues and throw these away straight away.
