Spots start to occur if the skin produces too much of something called sebum. Sebum has several functions. It helps to waterproof the skin and also to lubricate the hairs growing on our body and bring them out of the hair follicle to the surface.

Sometimes the body can produce too much sebum. Often during puberty when more testosterone is released in the body the amount of sebum can increase. This happens in about 80% of people. If too much sebum is produced it can mix with dead skin cells and block the hair in the follicle instead of helping it come out. When this happens bacteria can start to feed on the sebum and multiply under the blockage- essentially there is a little infection in the hair follicle. This can cause the redness and pain we associate with having a spot.

You might be tempted to scrub your skin if you get spots but this can make the redeness worse and cause more damage to the skin by removing too much of the protective sebum.
