      If you put your hands together like you’re praying and then interlock your fingers, you’ve got a good model of a muscle. If you make your hands go tight, it’s hard to pull the fingers apart, if you make your hand go loose the fingers come apart easily. That’s how muscles work: they contain fibres that are interlocked and they can be pulled together (which is a contraction) or pulled apart (an extension) depending on which chemicals are around
