• Question: why are tomatoes a fruit?

      Tomatoes are a funny…er…fruit? vegetable?!…Well, actually it depends on who you ask. See, from a biological point of view, they are indeed a fruit. This is because they come from the ovary of the plant (like fruits do and unlike vegetables that come from other parts, such as the roots, leaves or stem) and like fruits they also contain their seeds inside of them. That said, tomatoes are less sugary than normal fruits, so that’s one of the reasons why in the kitchen they are considered vegetables.

      Thinking about what I have told you (especially the bit about the seeds), can you think of any other “vegetables” that biologically are fruits? (for example, an aubergine, which has its seeds inside of it, is a fruit too 🙂 )
