Shooting stars are caused by bits of rock which float around in space but when they get too close to the earth, they get sucked into our atmosphere by gravity. When they travel through the atmosphere they create a lot of friction because they are travelling so fast (around 26 miles/second) and this causes the light trail behind the shooting star. We can only see them during the night but they also fall during the day too.
