A chemical test tube is not really particularly special. It’s a way of holding reactions of chemicals together and the bottom is curved to ensure that the best possible reaction occurs. Scientists have lots of fancy items made of glass of all different sizes and names. There is usually a particular reason why we have all these diferent types. Since I work with microbes, most of the tubes I use are plastic as they can just be thrown away after use. Glass has to be washed, so it’s safer for us just to have a new tube.
