Our brain controls our body through connections it makes with the nervous system. The nervous system carries electrical impulses to your brain through the nerves which act as electrical cables. These electrical impulses are made when the body receives a signal. For example if you touch something dangerously hot the temperature triggers pain receptors which tell your brain your hand is in danger so your brain activates the muscles required to move your hand out of danger.

Some actions in our body, like beating our heart our breathing, have to happen all the time. It would take up all of our time to stay alive if we had to tell our heart to beat 70 times a minute while remembering to breath and blink so these actions are taken care of by our autonomic nervous system.
