Well the nearest star is our own Sun…which is only around 150 million kilometres away from us (so, just around the corner :)). If we were to travel at the speed of light (that is at 299,792.458 kilometres per second), we will be there in 8 minutes and 19 seconds…which is not too bad. Unfortunately, we cannot travel at that speed, but if you consider the maximun speed at which rockets can travel (around 59,000 kilometres per hour), we could be there in 2,542 hours or 106 days.

Of course in reality that would be very difficult, as you will need fuel to last you that long (and I am talking about loads of fuel) and you would also hope that half way there you will not be burnt by the heat from the Sun.

As for the next nearest star, that is over 4 years away travelling at the speed of light (Proxima Centauri) and then it will just be ridiculous the amount of time it will take (well, actually, I have just made the calculation and it will take around 76,320 years to get there).

Of course these are all approximation, but sadly, I don’t think we will ever be able to “reach for the stars” 🙁
(but soon we will be going to Mars!)
