The earth spins on it’s axis, which runs from the north to the south pole, at about 1000 miles per hour. At the same time it is spinning at 67,000 miles per hour around the sun. That’s fast!

There’s lots of complicated physics and maths involved in explaining why we can’t feel the movement of the earth and I’m really not very good at maths! I think that the most important factor that stops us from being able to feel the movement of the earth is because it’s at a constant speed. If you think about traveling in a train at night when there are no lights outside. You can feel when you’re slowing down and speeding up to go in and out of stations but in between stations it’s very hard to tell if you are moving at all.

The same is true for us on the earth. Because it moves at a constant speed we can’t tell that it’s moving at all… If it were to suddenly slow down or stop moving we would know about it pretty fast!
