Mitosis is how one cell divides into two identical new cells. All cells contain instructions for making themselves in their DNA; during mitosis, the DNA is first copied (to give two sets of identical information) and then the cell swells as the two copies are separated from each other. As this happens, the cell get longer and eventually it splits in the middle to give two brand new, cells (often called ‘daughter cells’) both exactly the same as each other.
