The common cold is actually most often caused by a virus called the rhinovirus.

Even though a cold is normally caused by a virus the fact that the cold causes your immune system to become weakened can mean that the bacteria usually living harmlessly in your throat can cause another infection at the same time. This is called a co-infection.
