Now, I’m no biologist but I think people have bones because they keep our body together. So without a structure (like our skeleton), our body would flop onto the floor and we wouldn’t be able to hold ourselves up! All the muscles and ligaments that help you move need something to cling on to and bone is a very good, sturdy material for the job. Most animals (96-98%) don’t actually have bones and these are called “invertebrates”, literally meaning ‘without backbone’.

Examples of invertebrates would be insects, molluscs e.g. snails, crabs and octopus.

This means when insects have to grow, and because they have no bones to grow, they have to shed their outer shell and regrow a bigger one.
