      The correct answer is: ‘nobody knows’! Basically, we cry in response to a problem, which can be caused by different things. Babies cry when they are sad, in pain, or angry, while adults seem to cry mainly for sadness and (less so) for pain. Of course, adults also cry when they are happy! It seems that crying is mainly an emotional response which releases stress. Beyond that I have no idea!
